My friends, who have never been to France, told me that almost everything they know or imagine about France come from movies they have seen. At that time I wasn’t aware that people living so far away from home could possibly know this movie and this music. It appeared that it was songs from the movie « Amélie » (French name : le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain), played by Yann Tiersen. I couldn’t even name a famous French piano player that they could possibly know. One night, they told me about amazing piano songs they know from France. When I was traveling around Asia last summer, I made some Vietnamese friends and traveled with them for a while. But having an access to Mexican music through radio, or internet, and being able to watch Mexican movies or movies about Mexico helped me be a little bit more familiar with this culture, even though I learn more and more everyday since I live here. Without movies, music, documentaries, TV-shows, I personally wouldn’t have had any clue, or barely any, about Mexican cultures. At some point, it is the perfect mean to bring people together, to gather them around a common feeling, belief, or theme, no matter where people come from and where they grew up.Ĭultural products found in mass media help people having insights into other people’s culture, and diffusing cultural awareness. ![]() In fact, they allow people to have some insight in an other culture, but they also feature some global issues and themes in which everyone can recognize themselves nowadays. I think that movies play a particularly important and relevant role in the cultural globalization. But none of this two phenomenon appears as negative to me. ![]() At a global level, it might lead to a homogenization because in most countries, people are inevitably facing cultural products that come from elsewhere and tend to be influenced by what they hear or see, so they begin behaving similarly in some ways, they integrate things in their lives. It helps people discovering other cultures and ways of living, and allow them to make choices, and have lifestyles they couldn’t think about earlier, which may fit them better than those they are used to in their countries. I see it that way : it leads to a diversification process inside each countries but a kind of homogenization at a global level. However, I find it quite complicated to say if it leads to homogenization or diversification. ![]() In my opinion, the cultural globalization phenomenon is something quite positive. ![]()
